Clare Railway West

Postby PaulWirral » Mon Feb 07, 2011 11:14 am

Clare Railway West in the County Clare has been restored to offer a fun day out for families and school tours. Opened in 1887 and built by William Martin Murphy, the 27 mile railway ran between Ennis and Miltown Malbay. The service discontinued by 1961 and it was not until the late 20th Century that efforts were made to restore the original route.

Some of the restoration includes a Ticket Office and waiting room, a station house with living quarters, kitchen, bedrooms and toilets. There is also an old dining carriage renovated for tea/coffee and also includes a souvenir shops. Of course the highlight of the attraction is the steam engine ‘The Silabh Callan’, brought back to it’s former glory and carrying passengers.
