What Do You Call A Peace Process That Does Not Produce Peace ?

For the second night running large parts of East Belfast were reduced to a war zone , with hundreds of people involved in widespread rioting.For the second succesive night the U.V.F. launched a concerted attack on the Short Strand area, a Catholic enclave surrounded by Protestant districts.

Much of the media have described the battle zone as a traditional flashpoint.

The area is indeed crucial in understanding the recent Troubles. In the summer of 1970 it was in this very district that republican dissidents from the mainstream Official Republican movement defended the Short Strand in general and St Matthews Chapel in particular.The same targets in the past two nights.

The military defence of that district forty one years ago was the first military engagement carried out in Belfast by what was to become the Provisional I.R.A.
They lost their first volunteer that night and killed two loyalist attackers .Neither St. Matthews Chapel or any homes in the Short Strand were burnt.
That night cemented their place in the effections of the Catholic ghettos.. The Provisionals never looked back. The Official movement began its long spiral of decline.

So what can we learn from the past ?

This may become clearer when we find out who fired the shots in defence of the Short Strand in the past couple of nights.
Was it the Provisionals ?
The Continuity I.R.A. ?
The Real I.R.A. ?
Some faction of the I.N.L.A. ?

And if it was one of these modern dissident groups then could they supplant the Provisionals in the effections of the Catholic ghetto dwellers just as they themselves replaced the Officials all those years ago.
And if they did what would be the consequences for the Peace Process ?
